Hours before Fiorentina took to the pitch against Udinese, the club’s captain, Davide Astori was pronounced dead at the age of 31.
Astori reportedly died suddenly at an Udine hotel on Sunday morning, where La Viola were based ahead of Sunday’s clash.
All Serie A matches slated for today has been postponed as a sign of respect.
A club statement read: “Fiorentina is deeply saddened to announce that our captain Davide Astori has passed away, after suffering a sudden illness.
“For this terrible and delicate situation, and above all out of respect for his family, we appeal to the sensitivity of the media.”
