Here’s Why Ladies Need More Sleep Than Men

Findings have it that no matter the compatibility between a man and woman, when it comes to bed time, women require more sleep than men.

Both sexes are biologically designed to need different amounts of sleep, but the feminine gender tend to require more than their masculine counterpart because of their “complex” brains – meaning, they use their brains more actively than men during the day.

One of Britain’s leading experts, Jim Horne, revealed that women tend to multitask more than men; meaning they engage their brain more than men, who tend to focus on one or two matters at a time.

Horne, who is the director of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University and author of “Sleepfaring: A Journey Through The Science Of Sleep,” made this known during an interview with Mail Online.

His words: “One of the major functions of sleep is to allow the brain to recover and repair itself. During deep sleep, the cortex — the part of the brain responsible for thought memory, language and so on – disengages from the senses and goes into recovery mode.”

“The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need.”

“Women tend to multi-task – they do lots at once and are flexible – and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater.”

“The average is 20 minutes more, but some women may need slightly more or less than this.”

Horne believes the amount of sleep required is based upon how complex and intense the brain activity is during the day.

What’s interesting is that a man whose day is filled with several lateral thinking tasks and complex decisions, will need more sleep than most males though still not as much as a woman.

The big question now is what are the differences between a male brain and a female brain? Well, there’s a lot.

In 2014, a study was done with 949 men and women who had their brain activity tested and measured.

According to the outcome of the results, men’s brains had more connections within individual brain hemispheres, whereas women’s brains had more connections between them.

In literal terms, the study found that while the female brain preforms better using multiple functions simultaneously, the male brain can only maintain deep focus on one task.

Dr. Apostolos Georgopoulos, director of the Brain Science Centre at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, also confirmed this saying:

“Women’s brains are definitely different from men’s brains… What we have found is that women, in many different tasks, process information about five times faster than men, and use much less of their brain to do identical cognitive performance.”

Multi-tasking requires the brain to exert more energy and effort. This explains why women need more sleep than men.

The study also found that poor sleep among women was linked to a number of side effects. Increased levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression, and anger were all found in women who slept poorly, but not men.
